Trishaws Sri Lanka

Trishaw - the best way to see Sri Lanka

  • OFFICIAL NAME :  Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka
  • CAPITAL :  Colombo
  • POPULATION :  21.6 million
  • CURRENCY :  Sri Lanka rupee
  • OFFICIAL LANGUAGES :  Sinhala, Tamil and English
sri lanka mapsSeparated from India by the Palk Strait, Sri Lanka comprises one large island and several coral islets to the northwest known as Adam's Bridge. The main island is dominated by rugged central uplands. The fertile plains to the north are criss-crossed by rivers and bordered to the southeast by the Mahaweli River. Sri Lankan affairs are dominated by the conflict between the government and the Tamils, who are fighting for an independent state.

This pear-shaped island nation, known as Ceylon until 1972, is 438 kilometers long and 225 kilometers wide at its broadest point.

sri lanka map

Largely flat and rolling, the terrain is distinguished by a cluster of mountain peaks, the highest of which is the 2,524-meter- high Pidurutalagala in the south-central portion of the country. Numerous rivers originate in the mountains and flow in all directions toward the sea.
Sri Lanka's climate is tropical, with high humidity and year-round temperatures averaging 27 to 28 C. Two monsoon seasons occur each year. The southwest monsoon from May to October and the northeast monsoon from December to March bring adequate amounts of rainfall. The north averages about 100 centimeters of rain annually,.

Logging, along with slash-and-burn methods of farming, has resulted in rapid deforestation. Wildlife preserves, covering 10 percent of the island's land area, have been created to protect timber growing in the forest and jungle areas.

Travel by Trishaw in Sri Lanka

Travelling in Sri Lanka by trishaw is common with adventure travellers.
Tourists from different parts of the world who have never been to Sri Lanka before find the trishaw to be a really enjoyable mode of travelling around the country.
They travel to different parts of the island, braving many untold discoveries.
The trishaw offers one of the most common means of travelling around Sri Lanka

They bear a resemblance to taxis even though they are quite cheaper.

trisha Colombo
Trisha drivers tend to overcharge foreigners; therefore it is important to make sure that you know the right fares for particular places.  Make sure that you also bargain properly and plan to part with around 60 rupees for a short journey. In case they have a meter with them, make sure that they make use of it.

Travelling by trishaw in Sri Lanka can be a great adventure.
Even when you need to move around the city you can travel by trishaws as they have bold drivers who manoeuvre their way out of the jam and reach your destination in a matter of moments.
Trishaw transport is popular in Sri Lanka because they are small, quick and cheap. The auto is typically cheap and can be operated by a number of people. So, it provides you with the best option especially when you need to hurry. Because it can move to any place in Sri Lanka, it is a handy method of travelling around the country.

You will get to the services of a trishaw by standing by the road and waving once you see one passing. Alternatively, you can simply find a number of trishaws at a junction waiting for travellers like you. Always make sure that you are positive as regards it driver.

 Tuk tuk Sri Lanka

Traveling on a 'tuk tuk' or a trishaw, as the popular taxis are known in Sri Lanka, is an adventure even on city roads as their daring drivers weave in and out of traffic and squeezes through large trucks and buses with inches to spare. But these adventurers have to drive their own tuk-tuks.

Tuk tuk prices

2-3 years ago  'fair' price was Rs 20/km, now it is at Rs 40/km due to higher petrol cost, cost of living and import prices; no explanation at all for the increase in asking price from Rs 30 to Rs 50 per km!
So other factors are at play. Cartel behaviour of the drivers, for sure. Upcoming major greed yes. Maybe more drivers jumping into the game despite an absurd cost base (financing intrest starts at 15%/YEAR).

Riding Trishaw - Best Way to Experience Malacca Malaysia

The colorful trishaws of Malacca

The historic town of Malacca, Malaysia offers a wonderful blend of Asian and European influences. Also spelled Melaka, it bears traces of Malay, Chinese, Indian, Portuguese and Dutch cultures.

trishaws Melaka MalaysisThis varied background is displayed by the colorful trishaws that cruise around town. Each driver decorates their trishaw with bright flowers, flashing lights, flags and souvenirs.
The trishaws drivers line up in front of Christ Church on the main square and offer sightseeing excursions around town.

A one-hour tour costs 40 Malaysian ringgits, around $12. For this sum the rider gets transportation and a running commentary about Malacca and its history. It’s definitely well worth this journey into Malacca’s past.

Travel on Cycle Rickshaw at Myanmar

Myanmar (Burma)

The Golden Land  !

Myanmar

Myanmar Facts

Full country name: Union of Myanmar (Burma became Myanmar in 1989 after the State Law and Order Restoration Council decided that the old name implied the dominance of Burmese culture; the Burmese are just one of the many ethnic groups in the country)
Area: 671,000 sq km (416,020 sq mi)
Population: 46.8 million (growth rate 2.1%)
Capital city: Yangon (Rangoon) (pop 4 million)
People: 65% Burmese, 10% Shan, 7% Karen, 4% Rakhine and Chin, Kachin, Mon, Chinese, Indian and Assamese minorities
Language: Burmese, also Karen, Chin, Shan and Kachin dialects
Religion: 87% Theravada Buddhist, 5% Christian, 4% Muslim, 3% animist
Government: Military council

Myanmar has suffered internal strife from a smorgasbord of dictators, rebels and guerrillas, and is now synonymous in the West with the suppression of democracy and the use of slave labour. The refusal by the country's junta to allow an elected government to take power and its imprisonment of pro-democracy leader (and subsequent Nobel Peace Prize winner) Aung San Suu Kyi earned it international condemnation. Myanmar is now cementing economic bonds with South-East Asian nations, who believe `constructive engagement' is a better form of diplomacy than sanctions. Meanwhile, ceasefire accords have been signed with nine groups of anti-government rebels, the Karen guerrillas have virtually been demolished and a pragmatic deal with drug lord Khun Sa appears to have quietened affairs in the no-go zone of the Golden Triangle.

Myanmar is far from the easiest or most comfortable country in Asia to visit, but it has some magical sights, incredibly friendly people and offers a glimpse of a bizarre, inept Orwellian society that has withdrawn from contact with the late 20th century. Because of the government's clampdown on outside influences it is one of the least Western-influenced countries in the world. Many people mistake this for quaintness, but don't let this blind you to the political realities which created this situation.

The cycle rickshaw is a small-scale local means of transport in Myanmar; it is also known as trishaw. More than affordable.

Trishaw (saik-kar in Burmese) is used in all around Burma (Myanmar). There are millions of trishaws in Burma (Myanmar). Many people use trishaws as a short trip transportation tool. Trishaw drivers are mostly man and it will cost more or less money depending on how far you are going from one place to another.

Singapore

  • OFFICIAL NAME :  Republic of Singapore
  • CAPITAL :  Singapore
  • POPULATION :  3.5 million
  • CURRENCY :  Singapore dollar
  • OFFICIAL LANGUAGES :  Malay, English, Mandarin Chinese and Tamil

Singapore mapAn island state linked to the southernmost tip of the Malay peninsula by a causeway, Singapore was largely uninhabited between the 14th and 18th centuries. In 1819, an official of the British East India Company, Stamford Raffles, recognized the island's strategic position on key trade routes and established Singapore as a trading settlement. Today, Singapore is still one of the most important entrepôts in Asia.

Singapore is dominated by the Chinese, who make up 78% of the community; the old English-speaking Straits Chinese and newer Mandarin-speakers are now well integrated. Indigenous Malays are generally the poorest group. Serious race riots erupted in the 1950s, but today there is little overt ethnic tension. There is a significant foreign work force in Singapore; the government imposes firm-by-firm quotas on foreign workers and requires employers of foreign workers to pay a monthly levy or tax. A recent labor shortage has forced the government to try to attract scientists from the CIS, eastern Europe and Hong Kong. Society is highly regulated and government campaigns to improve public behavior are frequent.

From the days when it was known as the "Lion City" - an ancient sea town on the Straits of Malacca down to its present incarnation as a global metropolis, Singapore has inspired countless artists and writers, who have celebrated the city's lush beauty, its vivid style of life and piquant blend of cultures.

Singapore's  three-wheeled trishaws were introduced  in the 1940s, and were very popular form of transport there.

Today they remain one of the most pleasant ways to get to know the city, allowing you to get in amongst the people and atmosphere of the various parts of Singapore.
The tours take in the sights of Bugis and Little India, Clarke Quay, the Singapore River.
Food themed tours include the Street Food Trail, which introduces some of Singapore's hawker food.

Trishaws all lined up Singapore chinatow

The Chinatown district is recognized as a picturesque tourist asset and its buildings are being restored. A Singaporean consortium is involved in the development of a tourist resort on Indonesia's Bintan island, some 45 km (28 miles) across the Strait of Singapore.
Trishaw riders were primarily Chinese immigrants who had worked as rickshaw pullers. Many trishaw riders can converse fairly fluently in different dialects as well as a little English. Most of these rickshaw pullers came to Singapore around the period of World War II, with the bulk arriving during the late 1930s.
Most of those who took on the job had little skills and needed to earn a living fast.

 Trishaw Uncle

 Singapore's only licensed trishaws operator

Trishaw Uncle (三轮车大叔私人有限公司) is the one and only licensed operator for trishaw tours in Singapore appointed by the Singapore Tourism Board.

The yellow trishaws are driven by elderly Chinese uncles who may look quite feeble due to their age. But do not be fooled, these uncles ride the estimated 12km route at least three times a day.

Trishaw is the oldest form of transport in Singapore and gone are the days when a trishaw is made out of wood or thin metal.
